To all you folks that are Built for the Mountain Life --
In case you didn't know, we brought mountain life to
Brown's Island in Richmond, VA, on May 14-15, 2010 at Dominion Riverrock. This was the second
annual Dominion Riverrock festival showcasing the riverfront, and participants
and spectators alike really enjoyed it. Richmond is probably more of an outdoor
adventure capital than you realize. We have incredible running and biking
trails located right along the James River, which is home to class III and
class IV rapids - a kayaker's paradise!
Over 25,000 people
came out to celebrate riverlife, enjoy some riverrockin' music, or just to
watch the flying dogs compete in Ultimate Air Dogs competition or the flying
kayakers flip and spin off the 30-foot Red Bull Canal Crashers ramp. We had
over 3,000 competitors show up for
various events including the Native Eyewear Freestyle Bike best trick and
slopestyle competitions, the Snowshoe Mountain Urban Assault Mountain Bike
Race, the Kayak Boatercross, the Filthy 5k Mud Run and the James River Scramble
10k Trail Run.
If you haven't seen video and results from the Red Bull Canal Crashers, you MUST check
it out now! Click here to a YouTube video we found. Make
sure you see the end of this because celebrity extreme kayaker and Red Bull
Athlete, Tao Berman, was in
attendance and took home first place with that incredible jump. For Berman's
first time on a ramp, I'd say he did alright... Thanks to T&B Equipment for
building the ramp. It will most definitely be back next year.
Another crowd favorite of the weekend was the Eukanuba
Ultimate Air Dogs fetch it, catch it, and ultimate air competitions. Over 80 dogs came down to Brown's Island to
show off their skills. Milt Wilcox owns and runs Ultimate Air Dogs. Milt, you
rock. Richmond loves Ultimate Air Dogs.
And when I said riverrockin' music, I meant it. On Friday
night Grace Potter & the Nocturnals
took the stage with a bang, and Robert
Randolph & the Family Band got the crowd moving on Saturday night.
Then, there were of course some local hot shot acts to open for both the
headliners.
So all in all, Dominion Riverrock = SUCCESS.
Big shout out to Mountain Khakis for supporting Dominion Riverrock by providing the event staffers with awesome pants to wear. You made us look good out there! Mark your calendars for next year's Dominion Riverrock on May 13-14, 2011. Yes, it may be a little far from the mountains, but I promise it will be worth the trip. You don't want to miss it!
