Drew Kroft, of Dickinson College, shares about the climbing competition MK was a part of recently.
A few weeks ago we, the small but intense group of climbers at Dickinson College (Carlisle, PA), had our annual bouldering competition. Three of the older climbers, spent 14 pizza-fueled hours at the campus rock wall setting 42 excellent boulder problems. The point values topped out at 400, the grades around V5/6, in the form of a high and forbidding arête problem with some big moves on baby-smooth slopers.
The competition was scheduled to start at noon, so naturally everyone showed up at the gym around 12:15, after which we explained the rules, which were basically: climb for as long as possible, (around three hours, as it turned out) and then add up the top six sends. The climbers were split up into categories – guys and girls, and beginner and intermediate. We got an unusually large turnout, including a professor and a pair of small children. The kids didn’t compete, but they climbed hard and were duly rewarded with pizza.
The competition was friendly, yet fierce. After giving the results, we had a raffle for the prizes, which included, among other things, two free pairs of Mountain Khakis, which, naturally, disappeared pretty quickly. All in all, we considered the competition nothing less than a huge success.
Glad MK could be a part of this event!
